Events Related to Indian Classical Music

Music of India

The 'Music of India' series aims to bring Indian classical music to Madison. Being one of the oldest unbroken traditions of music in the world, Indian classical music can be broadly classified into the North Indian (Hindustani) and South Indian (Carnatic) branches. Indian music has evolved into a metaphysical entity that continues to charm laymen and philosophers alike. The rise of India as an economic and cultural power in the 21st century has also witnessed a surge of global interest in classical forms of Indian music. Through this series of music concerts, the Indian Graduate Students' Association (IGSA) aspires to expose the students of UW and the Madison community to the charm of Indian music. The Indian Music Circle of Wisconsin (IMCOW) (http://www.imcow.org/) is our regular collaborator in organizing the Music of India series.

Dhwani

Dhwani is a branch of the Music of India series of concerts that aims to provide students of UW and the non-student community of Madison with a flavor of North Indian classical music. 'Dhwani' (which literally means 'sound') brings highly acclaimed exponents of Hindustani (North Indian) classical music to the welcoming environs of UW.

heArtbeat ensemble

In the Fall 2011 edition of this series, IGSA presents one of the finest displays of Indian music in the form of the heArtbeat ensemble. Formed in 1999, this ensemble performs with accented percussion, reverberating rhythms and enchanting melodies - all this brought to life by a group of dynamic performers. Dr. Ghatam Karthick composes the musical pieces, while other artists inter-relate within themselves, incorporating impressive imagination and inventive performing styles. The 'Ghatam' - an earthen pot - is used as a percussion instrument in Carnatic music. It is common for great Indian musicians to append the name of their instrument to their first name. The ensemble merges traditional Indian melodies with the eclectic tunes of the West effortlessly. Its efforts have been lauded by legendary musicians, noted critics and mass audiences across the world. Karthick has travelled all over the world with his magic pot, performing in prestigious venues including the United Nations. He has performed lecture demonstrations and conducted many outreach workshops at universities around the world.
